• Sunday

    • Terraform, hashicorp.
      • Like a docker compose file for infrastructure. A config that lists the items you need (VMs, K8s clusters, cloudflare, whatever) and then a cli to plan and apply these (instantiate the nodes, bring them up).
      • VPC = virtual private cloud, of course. For networking between nodes. From AWS.
      • Interfaces with many other providers to handle the specifics of bringing various bespoke nodes up.
      • Can instantiate one system for dev, one for test, one for prod, etc. Maybe with different env vars, maybe with different nodes.
      • Would be a layer around kubernetes.
      • All config is as code, in source, versioned and reviewed.
    • GitOps.
      • The vcs hash is the version.
      • Branches match environments.
      • The merge action triggers the deploy (and other similar webhooks).
      • Infrastructure as code = terraform.
      • System config as code = ansible.
      • Application config as code = kubernetes.
    • AAA.
      • This blog was so helpful to look back and search through today. In the chaos of the move I had to do so much, and wasn’t sure what I had already done with AAA membership.
      • Created and bookmarked the online profile with AAA northeast. Printed membership card.
      • Remember annual dues are $125 for just AAA membership. This is with the motorcycle extension.
      • And remember through AAA, they give a discount for homeowner’s with my current Plymouth Rock coverage.
      • Called to get new auto insurance policy. They didn’t have an agent for NY on sunday. Told me to call back on monday.
    • Changed address with all credit cards and usps. Still love that my new zip is pure binary.
  • Saturday

    • Palantir filed s-1. Very curious how that will change. Big data for defense/security/shady is not the most public.
    • AWS Copilot, cli to manage container deployment to ECS.
    • Tsla earnings wednesday at noon.
    • Got Fios! Was seeing about 300down/50up around the middle of friday, we’ll see how throttled the gigabit gets throughout different times. Enrolled in autopay. While 5g is obviously faster, 2.4GHz has farther range. Fios will select the band automatically.
    • Added property and mortgage to mint. Automatic estimates from Zillow are close.
    • Bundled verizon mobile+home rewards. $5 off phone and wifi per month. Will be $10 off each when I change wireless to unlimited.
    • There are wifi-ethernet adapters (wan>lan). Some are usb direct, most have eth ports.
    • Few building firsts.
      • Ordered sheets and a few items. Mats, others. Default address in amazon now.
      • Sending people up after doorman call. You don’t have to go down.
      • Mail.
      • Compactor room for trash/recycling is down the hall.
    • Made DMV appointment for NY license.
    • Unclogged the conical burr grinder. Was jammed in storage.
    • Metromile isn’t available in NY yet.
    • Flooring measurements.
      • Came and checked leveling.
      • Home depot doesn’t do refinishes, and I want a diff design, so with absestos in consideration for the removal – I’m only really left with one option. Putting something on top.
      • Think my final choice is LifeProof Vinyl Plank Driftwood Beach!
    • Confirmed electrician load analysis on tuesday, 9-10am. Gave Ardian the heads-up so he can provide panel access.
    • Laundry options.
      • In unit eventually.
      • In basement. Might use this for comforter and bigger stuff.
      • 1 block away. Did this today. Can drop off or get picked up from my lobby.
    • Phone/home. Went to verizon.
      • Not doing unlimited (all lines go, not worth it). The bundle discount trumps others too, which is not as great as our 22% corporate discount right now.
      • Instead switched our old bad grandfather 3GB plan to a new 10GB, which is actually a couple dollars cheaper.
      • Changed autopay to debit (required for $20 discount), changed address to NY so the home+wireless bundle was valid. Cleaned the contact info, device names, much more.
      • In 2 years verizon is coming out with a senior unlimited plan for $80 (all lines) so we can do that then.
    • Ninja. Scheduled a scrapping. They’ll tow and handle paperwork. You get a little cash, but nowhere nears as much as personal sale. But a lot less effort/time, and I have to close tuesday, so this is fine. The other option is donating – wheelsforwishes is a great one!
  • Thursday

    • This blog needs to get back to software. It’s been about the move recently, since all my technical work is going to the internal blog.
    • Motorcycles.
      • Had an interesting convo with the building garage manager. He kept interrupting and speaking over me, it was tough.
      • Basically $200/mo for a motorcycle spot and $300/mo for a car spot. Can’t put more than one bike into a car spot.
      • Each resident only gets 2 spots at the building rate, otherwise you pay the external price (which is 2-3x as much).
      • Must pay daily rate until the next month starts, $22/day per motorcycle spot.
      • I’m going to have to looking into selling. Will probably just sell the BMW/ninja. Not sure about the ducati yet.
    • Called electrician about washer/dryer load analysis. $300 quote lmao. He said he’d try to schedule for next Tues when I’m off, and would confirm timing by tomorrow COB.
    • Asked the super about floor approval process as well. The current flooring is the original (mid-60s). It was laid with an adhesive that contains asbestos, so to replace would require an abatement that costs >10k. lmao again. Refinish or place on top = best options.
    • Got the wire back from jay for the extra closing buffer.
    • Got the confirmation from BoA that they’ll reimburse the last-minute points increase.
  • Wednesday

    • Closed and moved in!
    • One last hiccup. BoA made a last minute point adjustment due to credit score drop … due to a hard inquiry … that they performed. This was a difference of 2.5k at closing that came out of my pocket. Escalated to an SVP to rectify.
    • Sent the mover’s certificate of insurance to the super.
    • Requested an electrical load analysis from the super for washer/dryer.
    • Went to home depot to learn about flooring.
      • Hardwood vs laminate vs vinyl. Hardwood most expensive, engineered vs solid. Laminate is made to look like wood. Slightly waterproof. Vinyl is fake, fully waterproof, cheapest.
      • Got a sample to bring home and play with.
      • Definitely going light color. Open space, looks modern and clean.
      • Scheduled measurements for this saturday, they’ll call in the morning, then we get a quote.
      • Around $3/sqft for material, $3/sqft for levelling, $3/sqft for removal, $3/sqft for labor. If I need all, it will be about 10k. Else, if I can put vinyl on top, about 5k.
      • Since I’m not going to be here forever, the latter is the best option.
      • Top choices right now: LifeProof Vinyl Plank, either Chiffon Lace Oak or Driftwood Beach. If laminate: Pergo Outlast+, Graceland Oak.
    • Pick up the cubestorage items, cancelled the unit, all good.
    • Building is handling window and stainless steel sink tubes.

  • Tuesday

    • Issue with the wire transfer yesterday. Jay believes BoA was being intentionally slow so they could get an extra day of interest (the float). Finally went through today.
    • PT. Wall leans added.
    • Did the walkthrough. Inspections were good. Gonna redo the flooring now while I can!
    • Paid an extra $100 for extension of primary temp storage.
    • Total closing costs ended up being ~12k beyond the 210 down.
    • There was a mistake in the closing points, was 1.263 and should have been 0.88. Too late to regenerate the docs/disclosures. This is a difference of $2355. Asked BoA to issue a reimbursement.
    • Getting $2766 back for the buffer in the initial wire to cover extra closing fees.
    • Payments for both mortgage and maintenance begin in September.
  • Monday

    • Paid another installment of homeowner’s insurance (that’s 2 payments and I haven’t moved in yet :)).
    • FIOS. Got my ID verified, credit checked, and paid. Gigabit baby. $75/mo. The MyFios app is pretty cool. Installation scheduled for this Friday morning.
    • Cell phone. Currently paying $83/mo (75 before taxes/fees) for 3GB data. To go to unlimited it would be $128/mo (60 each before taxes/fees).
    • If I go solo, which I will soon, it will be $70/mo for gigabit wifi and $50/mo for unlimited data mobile.
    • Wired money to attorney’s trust for closing!
    • The delivery of my main items must start in the morning, so can’t happen wednesday. The next availability is the 21st, next tuesday. Bikes and everything will come then. Scheduled this and confirmed with both the mover and the building.
    • Did bed shopping online. I think I found the right one. Cali king platform bed.
    • Cleaned up the whole to-do list for move-in, and for the tasks following (parking, electrical load analysis, washer/dryer).
  • Wednesday

    • Got clearance from the bank to close.
    • Reached out to peter/jay to hurry the aztechs and any other process on their end, encouraging them to push the co-op as well. He said it will likely close next week. I said that’s unacceptable. It’s a single document changing hands 3 times in the same city. Let’s do it today.
    • Reached out to robert/ardian at the building to start planning the process from closing to move-in.
    • PT. Need to start doing sphynx exercise to reset the disc. No more flexion (hamstrings even) until reset.
    • Requested an airbnb extension of 2 days. Was pretty easy through the website.
    • Reserved the move-in with the building for Friday 7/17. Thursday was taken, and this gives a little more buffer. I can occupy before then.
    • Let the main temp company know that Friday 7/17 will be the final delivery date. I’ll handle the billing extension.
